"Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination.
They open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve."
- Sidney Sheldon
Our History In 1885 the Keene Valley Library was founded by a group of summer “cottage ladies” who wished to establish a place for books which might be of interest to those who lived nearby or who, like themselves, visited during the summer months.
The “new” library, completed in 1896 at a cost of $1,300, was 25 square feet, with bookcases on the sides and rear walls. In 1899 our library received its charter to become a free association, not-for-profit library. The original charter was updated in 2010 when the Keene Valley Public Library became the Keene Valley Library Association.
The Keene Valley Library has expanded in its 130-year history all the while maintaining the look of a traditional Adirondack building with walls of pine, latticework, a fern garden, paintings and comfortable reading chairs. In 2000, the Keene Valley Library was placed on the National Registry of Historic Buildings that are worthy of preservation.
The primary reason for founding the Keene Valley Library in 1885 was simple - to give members of the community access to books and to offer diverse opportunities for exploration of ideas and new interests in a comfortable setting. Over 130 years later the mission has expanded but the spirit of the original founders to serve the community remains. As our young children and families grow, it is the time to assure the Keene Valley Library grows with them. Our Capital Campaign is committed to strengthening the framework built over the past 130 years so that the library will be prepared to meet the challenges and advances presented in the decades to come.
Our Mission
The mission of the Keene Valley Library is to connect people to ideas, experiences, information, and the community in a comfortable, welcoming setting. We strive to do this through: providing adults and children with a collection of current and relevant books, other media, and local Adirondack historical resources; providing an inviting and lively cultural center for community events; evolving as our community grows and technology advances.
